A Dessert Called Dirt with Worms is a blast to make and even better to eat. I got this Recipe while I was in College at Washington State University many years ago. Me and a friend had to make a dessert for a trip to the dunes. That is how The Waldo Family Recipes was started
There was a place about 30 minutes out of town on the border of Washington and Idaho on the Snake River. It was a large area with some Dunes as well as a large pavilion area to hang out in. We were going to go to a cookout that happens every year at the start of the school year. Well, when we arrived with about 40 of our closest friends, we brought this huge bowl of Dirt out. It was a huge hit, and it disappeared in minutes; Dave and I did not even get any, lol.
Well, here it is in all its glory, just waiting for you to assemble it. This is a very rich and high-calorie dessert and should be eaten with a disclaimer attached.
Ingredients for Dirt:
- 1 package (14.3 oz.) Oreo Cookies
- 8 oz. Cream Cheese, Softened
- 1 cup Powdered Sugar
- 12 oz. Cool Whip (or other whipped topping)
- 1/4 cup Unsalted Butter, Softened
- 2 (3.4 oz.) Packages of Instant Vanilla Pudding
- 3 1/2 cups of Cold Milk
- 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
- Gummy Worms
Preparing your Awesome Dessert Called Dirt:
Prepare the Oreo Crust:
- Crush the Oreo cookies first. You may either use a food processor or toss them in a zip-top bag, then smash them with a rolling pin. Crush them up into little crumbs.
- About 1/2 cup of the crushed Oreos should be set aside for subsequent use as a topping.
- In a mixing dish, combine the remaining crushed Oreos and melted butter. Mix thoroughly.
- To make the Crust Layer, press the Oreo and butter mixture into the bottom of a glass bowl. Firmly press it down with the back of a spoon.
Prepare the Cream Cheese, Pudding, and Cool Whip Layers:
- In a mixing bowl, mix the softened cream cheese and Cool Whip until smooth. This will result in a creamy coating that will be easier to distribute.
- Mix in the Powdered Sugar and Vanilla Extract until fully combined with the Cream Cheese and Cool Whip mixture.
- In a separate bowl, stir together the instant vanilla pudding mix and cold milk until smooth. This takes roughly 2 minutes on average.
- Add the Pudding to the Prepared Cream Cheese and Cool Whip mixture. Mix the whole thing together.
This is Very Addictive and Should be Handled with Care. Eat at Your Own Risk.
Build the Layers of Dirt:
- Spread the Mixture over the Oreo Crust in the Glass Bowl, Creating an Even Layer.
- Spread the crushed-up Oreos as a thin layer of dirt, fully covering the layer of pudding
- Just keep doing these things till the glass bowl is full.
Decorate and Chill:
- Cover the Dessert with the Crushed Oreos as a “Dirt” topping.
- Decorate with gummy worms to give it that Dirt look.
- Refrigerate the dessert for at least a few hours, or better yet, overnight, to enable the flavors to merge and the dessert to set. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a cover.
Serve: After the dessert has chilled and been set up properly, it is ready to serve and enjoy!
Now I simplified the Recipe by putting all the stuff, like the pudding, cream cheese, and powdered sugar, together. I did it out of necessity, but it works and is still as good, if not better. They say us college kids don’t know how to cook, haha.
Next, I have Got to Pick a Wine, but that Could Be Tricky:
Due to its rich and sweet tastes, a Dessert Called Dirt might be a little difficult to pair with Fine Wine. Generally speaking, you want a wine that is sweet enough to go well with the dessert but not overshadow it. Here are a few wines that could be suitable:
- Riesling: White Riesling Fine Wine is sweet and has notes of peach, apricot, and honey. Its sweetness can counteract the dessert’s richness, while its acidity can cut through all of the sweet flavors.
- Tawny Port: The tastes of dried fruit, caramel, and nuts may be found in Tawny Port, a fortified wine. In contrast to the dessert’s richness and chocolate flavor, it may be rather pleasant.
- Cream Sherry: Cream Sherry is a creamy, sweet, fortified sherry with toffee, caramel, and nut aromas. It may enhance the taste of the dessert and provide another layer of richness.
- Moscato: This sparkling Italian Fine Wine is light and sweet, with flowery and fruity aromas. Its effervescence and sweetness can add a refreshing contrast to the dessert.
Keep in mind that Fine Wine matching is subjective, and individual preferences may be very important. To evaluate how the tastes come together and figure out which pairing you like best. It’s always a good idea to sample a few sips of the wine along with the dessert. You may also think about serving the Dessert with Coffee or a dessert cocktail if you don’t prefer wine.
Fine Wine pairing may be pleasing but occasionally challenging, especially when it comes to sweets. A excellent strategy is to sample various wines to determine what you think pairs well with the Dessert Called Dirt. Since every person has different tastes, don’t be afraid to try different combinations until you discover one that you like best. Take great pleasure in your fine wine and dessert sampling experience!
